    Good morning, Ray.

I can’t agree with you more about social networking. Judicious use of some of these sites can be a great way to build relationships and find very interesting people we may not have met otherwise.

I’ll second your recommendation of Facebook and Twitter, but I’m not as fond of MySpace as I was a few years ago.

I’ve experimented for a couple of years on a wide variety of social networking sites and would not advise someone else to look at all of them the way I have. Find a couple that work well for you and fit your personality and then concentrate your efforts there.

It’s like interacting on forums. You’re probably better off concentrating on a handful and really getting to know the people there rather than visiting dozens and barely doing more than scratching the surface.

You’re right that Twitter takes some getting used to. The first time I tried it, I just didn’t see why it was useful. Later, I tried it again and the little light bulb above my head lit up. Now, I’d have a hard time not using Twitter.

In fact, I have Twitterrific (a Macintosh desktop application for working with Twitter) running in a corner of my screen and it just notified me while I was writing this that there were about 15 new tweets ready when I wanted to read them.

I’m not sure that social networking is for everyone. Some people just use the services to spam others with non-stop offers and that’s a good way to lose followers and friends.

I have nothing against making offers, especially since I earn my living with affiliate marketing, but that should only be a part of what we do. People are social creatures and making friends and interacting with others is the basis for SOCIAL networking.

I haven’t been in touch much for the last couple of months, but I’m reading what you write on a regular basis.

Hope you’re doing well in 2009, Ray.

    Hi Ray,

I like this post but was hoping you would elaborate more on how this relates to traffic exchanges since it is not wise to blatantly blast your url out there in these social sites.

    Still good info.

I agree Tom, John does cover things well and one reason I always welcome his comments and do my best to read all his blog and forum posts.

Mark, it is true that blasting your url to social sites is a no no…however using programs such as Tweet My Blog and other formats allows you to notify your Twitter followers and Face Book friends when you have, say posted something new on your blog. Whatever you are doing on a daily basis, just mention it in Twitter or Face Book…name recognition is important. When people take interest in what you have to say, they are more likely to check out your profile, see what sites you own or promote, etc.

For example, each blog post I make here is automatically sent to Twitter, which in turns sends a notification to my Face Book page. :)
